The 27th Africa Cup of Nations was organized by CAF and awarded to Angola as host. Qualification began in October 2007 and involved 53 African national teams. However, two days before the tournament started, a terrorist attack targeted the Togo national team's bus as it arrived in Angola, leading to Togo's withdrawal and reducing the field from 16 to 15 teams.
The tournament was held in Angola from 10 to 31 January 2010, with 15 nations competing across 29 matches. Egypt progressed through the competition and faced Ghana in the final, winning 1–0 to claim the championship for the seventh time in their history and for a record third consecutive tournament.
Egypt's third successive Africa Cup of Nations title was described as unprecedented in the tournament's history. The Togo attack cast a shadow over the event and prompted discussions about security for international football teams traveling in conflict-affected regions. The reduced field meant three fewer matches were played than originally planned.
