The concept of a Youth Olympic Games was first proposed in 1998, but formal plans were announced at the 119th IOC session on 6 July 2007. Singapore was chosen as host city on 21 February 2008, defeating Moscow 53–44 in a postal ballot of 105 IOC members, giving Southeast Asia its first opportunity to host an IOC-sanctioned multi-sport event.
Held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010, the inaugural Summer Youth Olympic Games brought together around 3,600 athletes aged 14–18 from 204 nations competing in 201 events across 26 sports. Opening and closing ceremonies were staged at the Float@Marina Bay, with athletes housed at Nanyang Technological University. China was the most successful nation overall, though no official medal tables were published.
The Games established the Youth Olympics as a recurring IOC event and introduced hallmark features such as mixed-NOC teams and the Culture and Education Programme. The event was notable for several controversies, including budget discrepancies, two doping cases among wrestlers, a taekwondo walkover, and allegations of overage Bolivian footballers, prompting organisational scrutiny for future editions.
