Formula One introduced sweeping technical regulations for 2014, replacing the naturally aspirated 2.4-litre V8 engine with a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 incorporating an energy recovery system. This shift heavily favoured teams that had invested most effectively in the new power unit formula, with Mercedes emerging as the dominant force.
The 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship ran across 19 races from March in Australia to November in Abu Dhabi. Lewis Hamilton claimed 11 victories and 384 points to win the Drivers' title ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg, while Mercedes secured the Constructors' Championship with 701 points, ending Red Bull's four-year dominance.
Mercedes' triumph ended Red Bull's four consecutive championship double and established the Silver Arrows as the new benchmark. Defending champion Sebastian Vettel went winless, the first defending champion to do so since 1998. The season was also overshadowed by Jules Bianchi's crash at the Japanese Grand Prix; he died in July 2015, marking F1's first fatal accident since 1994.
