The kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank by Palestinian militants prompted Israel's Operation Brother's Keeper, which killed 10 Palestinians and imprisoned over 600. Hamas resumed rocket attacks after an Israeli airstrike killed one of its militants on 29 June 2014, escalating into open conflict between Israel and Gaza.
Beginning on 8 July 2014, Israel launched aerial strikes on the Gaza Strip, expanding to a full ground invasion on 17 July with the stated aim of destroying Hamas's tunnel network. Hamas and other militant groups fired over 4,500 rockets into Israel in response. The seven-week conflict ended with an open-ended ceasefire announced on 26 August 2014.
The war left between 2,125 and 2,310 Gazans dead, the majority civilians, and over 10,000 wounded. More than 7,000 homes were destroyed and 89,000 damaged. Reconstruction costs were estimated at US$4–6 billion over 20 years, and over 1,000 children were left permanently disabled by their injuries.
