The Games were originally scheduled for September 2022 in Hangzhou, China. On 6 May 2022, organizers postponed them due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which made safe hosting of a large continental multi-sport event unfeasible at the originally planned dates.
The 19th Asian Games were held from 23 September to 8 October 2023 in Hangzhou, China, under the branding Hangzhou 2022. The event coincided with the 110th anniversary of the first continental games, the 1913 Far Eastern Championship Games, and brought together athletes from across Asia.
Hangzhou became the third Chinese city to host the Asian Games, following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010. The successful staging of the postponed Games demonstrated the region's capacity to adapt major international sporting events to public health disruptions while retaining the original host city and branding.
