The previous World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, had been postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, disrupting the usual two-year cycle. To restore the regular schedule, the next edition was planned for 2023. Budapest, which had previously expressed interest in hosting the 2007 Championships before withdrawing, was selected as the host city.
The 2023 World Athletics Championships were held from 19 to 27 August 2023 at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary. This was the nineteenth edition of the championship and the first ever staged in Hungary, bringing the world's premier track-and-field competition to the country for the first time.
The championships restored the standard two-year competition cycle following the COVID-19-related disruption. Budapest successfully hosted a major global athletics event after its earlier bid for the 2007 Championships had been withdrawn, with the 2007 edition ultimately held in Osaka, Japan.
