Building on four consecutive post-Soviet Olympic appearances and fielding its largest-ever delegation, Azerbaijan sent 53 athletes to the 2012 London Games with defending judo champion Elnur Mammadli leading the team as flag bearer at the opening ceremony.
Azerbaijan competed in 15 sports at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The nation's wrestlers were particularly dominant, with Toghrul Asgarov and Sharif Sharifov each winning gold medals in men's freestyle events, contributing to a haul of more than five wrestling medals overall.
Azerbaijan finished the Games with 10 medals, its highest single-Games total ever and double its cumulative medal count from Athens 2004. The result established London 2012 as the nation's most successful Olympic Games to that point.
