In September 2008, Delhi Police received intelligence that members of the Indian Mujahideen, a designated terrorist outfit responsible for multiple bomb attacks across India, were hiding in a residential flat in the Batla House locality of Jamia Nagar, Okhla, New Delhi.
On 19 September 2008, Delhi Police mounted an armed operation to arrest the Indian Mujahideen suspects at the Batla House flat. The confrontation resulted in the deaths of two militants and Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma of Delhi Police, while the remaining suspects were apprehended.
The operation led to the arrest of several Indian Mujahideen members. In March 2021, a Delhi court sentenced arrested suspect Ariz Khan, also known as Junaid, to death for the murder of Inspector Sharma, marking one of the significant judicial outcomes tied to the Indian Mujahideen cases.
