Chasiv Yar's elevated terrain and strategic position in Donetsk Oblast made it a high-value objective for Russian forces advancing westward following the fall of nearby Bakhmut. Its location on a ridge overlooking lower terrain gave defenders a significant advantage, prompting Russian forces to mount a deliberate assault rather than a swift advance.
Beginning on 4 April 2024, Russian Armed Forces launched direct assaults on Chasiv Yar, gradually seizing the district east of an internal canal. Russian troops subsequently crossed the canal and, by early August 2025, claimed control of the city, though Ukrainian forces and the Institute for the Study of War reported continued fighting within its limits as late as December 2024.
Russia's advance on Chasiv Yar brought its forces closer to the strategically significant cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, the two largest settlements in Donetsk Oblast not under Russian occupation. As of November 2025, both cities remained under Ukrainian control but continued to face Russian shelling, reflecting ongoing pressure on Ukraine's defensive lines in the region.
