During the stalemate in Southern Palestine in late 1917, the commander of the Ottoman Yildirim Army Group ordered a reconnaissance in force against EEF outpost lines held by the 8th Mounted Brigade. The attacking force greatly outnumbered the Yeomanry troops defending the position.
On 27 October 1917, Ottoman infantry and cavalry attacked the 8th Mounted Brigade at el Buqqar Ridge. Despite heavy casualties, most Yeomanry held their ground until reinforcements arrived and the attackers withdrew, though one group of Yeomanry was overwhelmed and killed.
The Ottoman attack failed to dislodge the EEF outpost line. Four days later, on 31 October 1917, the EEF launched its Southern Palestine Offensive with the Battle of Beersheba, employing two infantry and two mounted divisions to break the regional stalemate.
