Oda Nobuyuki, younger brother of Oda Nobunaga, conspired against the clan head with the support of Oda Nobuyasu, Shibata Katsuie, and Hayashi Hidesada. The rebels sought to overthrow Nobunaga's leadership of the Oda clan during the turbulent Sengoku period of feudal Japan.
The two factions of the Oda clan clashed at Inō in Owari Province on October 7, 1556. Nobunaga's forces defeated the rebel coalition led by Nobuyuki. Following the battle, the three principal conspirators were spared execution through the intercession of Tsuchida Gozen, the mother of both Nobunaga and Nobuyuki.
Despite the pardon, Nobuyuki launched a second rebellion in 1557, which was suppressed and his castle at Suemori destroyed. In 1558, upon learning of yet another planned uprising from the defecting Shibata Katsuie, Nobunaga feigned illness to lure Nobuyuki close and assassinated him at Kiyosu Castle, eliminating the internal threat permanently.
