In 1707, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb died without formally designating a successor. His will instructed his sons to divide the empire among themselves, but the princes — including Bahadur Shah I and Muhammad Azam Shah — failed to reach a satisfactory agreement, making armed conflict inevitable.
On 20 June 1707, half-brothers Bahadur Shah I and Muhammad Azam Shah met in battle at Jajau. The engagement was part of the broader Mughal war of succession triggered by Aurangzeb's death. The two princes commanded opposing Mughal forces in a direct confrontation for control of the empire.
Muhammad Azam Shah and his three sons were killed at Jajau, eliminating his line as a rival claimant. Bahadur Shah I was subsequently crowned Mughal emperor on 19 June 1707 at the age of 63, consolidating imperial authority and temporarily stabilizing the succession crisis.
