Pro-government militias loyal to warlord Barre Hiiraale controlled the strategically important Southern Somali port of Kismayo. Islamist forces affiliated with al-Shabaab and the Islamic Courts Union sought to seize the city, launching an offensive against these militias starting August 20, 2008.
Islamist fighters led by Ahmed Madoobe and Hassan Turki assaulted Kismayo over three days of intense urban combat. The battle resulted in 89 deaths and 207 injuries before the pro-government forces under Barre Hiiraale withdrew from the city on August 22, 2008.
Following their defeat, Barre Hiiraale's militias abandoned Kismayo, allowing the Islamist forces to take full control of the port city. This represented a significant territorial gain for al-Shabaab and allied Islamist groups in southern Somalia.
