The Principality of Montenegro sought to expand its territory into the Muriqi region near Shkodra, an area inhabited by Albanian Malësors. Montenegrin general Mirko Petrović coordinated a multi-pronged offensive, assigning captains Kusovac, Pejović, and Plamenac to attack from the north while Savo Vujović led a southern force, and a priest blocked roads from Bar to cut off Albanian reinforcements.
Montenegrin forces launched a coordinated assault on the Muriqi region in 1861–1862, with approximately 200 soldiers attacking from the north under Captain Plamenac and 400 men pressing from the south under Vujović. Albanian Malësor defenders engaged both columns, fighting to protect their settlements in an area that straddles present-day Montenegro near the Albanian border.
The Albanian Malësors emerged victorious, repelling the Montenegrin attempt to incorporate Muriqi into the Principality of Montenegro. The battle demonstrated the resilience of local Albanian clans against external territorial expansion during a period of ongoing Balkan power struggles in the nineteenth century.
