During World War I, Russia moved to occupy parts of Iran to prevent the country from falling under the influence of the Central Powers. Iranian resistance forces, unwilling to accept foreign domination, organized under local commanders to contest Russian advances near Tehran.
On 17 December 1915, Iranian forces under the command of Heydar Latifiyan engaged Russian troops in battle around Robat Karim, close to Tehran. The fighting ended in a Russian tactical victory, allowing Russian forces to secure the region and neutralize Central Powers influence in that area of Iran.
Although Russia prevailed tactically, Iran was not absorbed as a colony by any foreign power and managed to preserve its formal independence through the duration of World War I. The battle remains a symbol of Iranian armed resistance against great-power occupation during the conflict.
