A disputed succession to the Crown of St. Stephen set rival factions against each other in Hungary. Stjepan Banić aligned with Vladislaus III of Varna, while Ulrich II of Celje backed the infant Ladislas the Posthumous's future claim to the throne, bringing the two sides into armed conflict.
On March 1, 1441, the forces of Ulrich II of Celje, commanded by Celian–Czech mercenary Jan Vitovec, met those of Stjepan Banić near Samobor in the Kingdom of Slavonia. Ulrich II's side emerged victorious, and Banić was taken prisoner following the engagement.
Despite the victory, Elisabeth of Bohemia—mother of the infant Ladislas—died the following year, compelling Ulrich II to recognize Vladislaus III as king and release his prisoners. Vladislaus III subsequently died at the Battle of Varna against the Ottoman Empire, altering the course of the Hungarian succession.
