The Katipunan, a Filipino revolutionary society opposing Spanish colonial rule, had begun organizing armed resistance across Luzon in 1896. The Magdiwang faction, active in Cavite province, mobilized under Diego Mojica to stage an armed assault, driven by the broader nationalist uprising then spreading from Manila.
On the morning of 31 August 1896, Magdiwang Katipunan forces led by Diego Mojica attacked near Pasong Kalabaw and the town tribune of San Francisco de Malabon in Cavite, marking the first revolutionary battle in the province. The engagement lasted from approximately 10 in the morning and concluded in a victory for the revolutionaries.
The battle signaled the start of the revolution in Cavite, and numerous further uprisings broke out later the same day across the province. General Artemio Ricarte later memorialized the victory in a literary piece published in 1899, cementing the battle's place in Philippine revolutionary history.
