Following Japan's surrender in August 1945, Indonesian authorities sought to seize Japanese weapons in anticipation of a returning Dutch colonial force. When the Semarang garrison refused to hand over their arms, tensions escalated sharply. An incident then triggered a massacre of Japanese civilians in the city, pushing both sides toward open conflict.
Between October 14 and 19, 1945, Japanese Sixteenth Army troops clashed with Indonesian People's Security Agency personnel and pemuda fighters in the streets of Semarang, Central Java. The five-day urban battle, known in Indonesia as Pertempuran Lima Hari, involved sustained fighting across the city and became the first significant military engagement of the newly proclaimed Indonesian state.
The battle is regarded as the first major clash involving the Indonesian military, marking an early demonstration of armed resistance during the Indonesian National Revolution. It established a precedent for armed confrontation between Indonesian forces and foreign military powers in the months following independence.
