The Kuomintang Nationalist Government launched a series of encirclement campaigns against Communist-held Soviet territories in central China. The second such campaign targeted the Eyuwan Soviet, prompting the deployment of the Nationalist 34th Division to suppress Communist forces in the region.
From March 6 to 12, 1931, the Fourth Red Army of the Chinese Communist Party engaged and defeated the Nationalist 34th Division at Shuangqiaozhen. The battle resulted in the capture of the division's commander, Major General Yue, a descendant of the celebrated Song dynasty general Yue Fei.
The captured Nationalist commander, Major General Yue, was held by the Communists and later executed by firing squad in August 1932 on the orders of CCP leader Zhang Guotao. He was posthumously promoted to full general by the Nationalist government, marking the battle as a significant Communist tactical success in the Eyuwan region.
