The International Olympic Committee determined that the International Boxing Association (AIBA) had serious deficiencies in finance, governance, ethics, and refereeing and judging, leading to its removal as the organising body for Olympic boxing on 22 May 2019. This was an unprecedented governance action taken ahead of a scheduled Olympic cycle.
Boxing at the 2020 Summer Olympics was held at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Tokyo from 24 July to 8 August 2021. Thirteen events were contested, managed not by AIBA but by an ad-hoc task force led by Morinari Watanabe, president of the International Gymnastics Federation. The programme was also updated, redistributing two events from men's to women's competition.
The tournament marked the first programme update since the 2012 London Games, expanding women's boxing representation at the Olympics. The governance crisis also raised long-term questions about AIBA's role in future Olympic cycles and the sustainability of boxing's place in the Olympic programme.
