An International Canoe Federation board meeting at Windsor on 5 December 2009 approved reforms to the Olympic canoeing program, replacing men's 500m sprints with 200m races and adding a women's K-1 200m event in place of the men's C-2 500m, aiming to increase gender equity and spectator appeal.
Canoeing at the 2012 London Olympics was held across two disciplines: canoe slalom at the Lee Valley White Water Centre (29 July–2 August) and canoe sprint at Eton Dorney (6–11 August). Around 330 athletes competed in 16 events, with France dominating slalom and Hungary leading in sprint medals.
The restructured program set a precedent for greater female participation in Olympic sprint canoeing. Finals were spread over three days instead of the traditional two, and the format changes influenced subsequent Olympic canoeing schedules, cementing 200m sprints as the standard distance.
