Building on the success of cycling at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where Britain won medals in four events with multiple athletes, the IOC restructured the track programme, removing individual pursuit, points race and men's Madison while adding women's team sprint, team pursuit, keirin and a new Omnium event for both sexes. Countries were also restricted to one entry per track event.
Cycling at the 2012 London Summer Olympics took place between 28 July and 12 August at five venues, including London Velopark for track and BMX, Hadleigh Farm for mountain biking, The Mall area for road races, and Hampton Court Palace for time trials. Around 500 athletes competed across 18 events spanning road, track, mountain bike and BMX disciplines.
Despite rule changes specifically aimed at curbing British dominance, Great Britain nonetheless won eight gold medals in cycling, making it the only nation to claim more than a single gold. This confirmed Britain's status as the world's leading cycling power and reflected the success of its structured high-performance programme.
