Cause → Event → Consequence
As the Vietnam War entered its final days in April 1975, North Vietnam sought to capture all islands in the South China Sea held by the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), anticipating imminent reunification and the need to establish clear territorial control over contested island groups.
The Vietnam People's Navy and Viet Cong conducted a coordinated naval operation against South Vietnamese-held positions on the Spratly Islands and other islands along Vietnam's southeastern coast, seizing control of these strategically located territories in the South China Sea.
The operation ended in complete victory for North Vietnam, transferring control of the Spratly Islands to the Vietnamese communist forces. Although it did not materially affect the war's outcome, it enabled the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to assert sovereignty over these island groups following national reunification in 1975.
