FIBA Europe organized its 32nd continental basketball championship, also functioning as a European qualifier for the 2002 FIBA World Championship. The top four or five finishers — depending on Serbia's placement — would earn berths, drawing sixteen national teams to compete across Ankara, Antalya, and Istanbul.
Held in Turkey from 31 August to 9 September 2001, the tournament culminated in a final between Serbia and host nation Turkey. Serbia won 78–69, with Vlado Šćepanović and İbrahim Kutluay each scoring 19 points for their respective sides. Serbia's Peja Stojaković was named tournament MVP.
Serbia secured its third FIBA European title and its eighth overall under the Yugoslavia name, marking the last time the country would win the championship under that designation. The top finishers also qualified for the 2002 FIBA World Championship, advancing European representation at the global level.
