Denmark earned the right to host the 2001 contest after Olsen Brothers won the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest with "Fly on the Wings of Love", with Danish broadcaster DR organising the event at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.
Twenty-three countries competed in the 46th Eurovision Song Contest on 12 May 2001, hosted by Natasja Crone Back and Søren Pilmark. Estonia's entry "Everybody", performed by Tanel Padar, Dave Benton, and 2XL and written by Ivar Must and Maian-Anna Kärmas, took first place, with Denmark, Greece, France, and Sweden completing the top five.
Estonia's victory was historically notable as the first Eurovision win by a former Eastern Bloc nation that had debuted in the 1990s. Greece achieved its best result to that point, while Ireland recorded its worst placement, finishing 21st. Seven countries including Austria, Belgium, and Finland were relegated from future editions.
