The 1952 Winter Olympics were awarded to Oslo, Norway, and as part of the multi-sport programme, figure skating was included with three disciplines — ladies', men's, and pairs events. Compulsory figures and free skating portions were scheduled across separate outdoor venues to accommodate different technical requirements.
Three figure skating events were held in Oslo from 16 February onward, with compulsory figures skated at the outdoor Jordal Amfi rink and free skating at Bislett Stadium. Conditions were notably stable with no significant weather or ice problems. American skater Dick Button won the men's title and executed the first triple jump — a triple loop — ever landed in Olympic competition.
Dick Button's historic triple loop set a new benchmark in figure skating athleticism, demonstrating that triple jumps were achievable in competition and influencing the sport's technical development for decades. His second consecutive Olympic gold reinforced American dominance in men's figure skating during this era.
