Cause → Event → Consequence
Two weeks before this battle, the French had expelled the Spanish army from French territory at the Second Battle of Boulou. During the subsequent repositioning, Pierre Augereau's French division became separated from Dugommier's main army, presenting what Spanish commander La Unión judged to be an exploitable vulnerability.
On 19 May 1794, Spanish forces under the Conde de la Unión launched an attack on Sant Llorenç de la Muga, targeting Augereau's isolated division. The Spanish assault was overly complex in its conception, and Augereau's French troops successfully repulsed it, denying Spain the tactical opportunity it had sought.
The failure of the Spanish attack left Augereau's division intact and rejoined with Dugommier's army, consolidating French momentum gained since the Second Battle of Boulou. Spain's inability to exploit French separation underscored weaknesses in its strategic execution during the War of the Pyrenees campaign.
