Canada selected the University of Toronto Graduates, winners of the 1927 Allan Cup, to represent the country at the 1928 Winter Olympics. However, head coach Conn Smythe refused to travel to St. Moritz after disagreements with the Canadian Olympic Committee over player selections, leaving the team to compete under captain Red Porter's leadership.
