Following Ukraine's strong tradition in Eurovision, the EBU and host broadcaster AVRO organised the tenth edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Amsterdam, the Netherlands hosting for the second time after Rotterdam 2007. Twelve countries entered, including three debutants — Albania, Azerbaijan, and Israel — while four nations withdrew from the previous edition.
The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2012 took place on 1 December 2012 at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, hosted by Ewout Genemans and Kim-Lian van der Meij. Twelve countries competed, the fewest in the contest's history. Ukraine's Anastasiya Petryk performed 'Nebo', with Georgia and Armenia finishing second and third respectively.
Ukraine claimed its first Junior Eurovision victory, with a record-breaking winning margin of 35 points. This was also Ukraine's second Eurovision success overall, following Ruslana's triumph at the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest. The record-low participation of twelve countries highlighted concerns about the contest's declining breadth.
