The 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis sought to expand its program by including North American sports. Lacrosse, widely played in Canada and the United States, was selected as a demonstration and medal sport, attracting teams from both nations, including a Mohawk nation side representing Indigenous lacrosse traditions.
Three teams competed in the lacrosse tournament: two Canadian clubs and one American team. The Winnipeg Shamrocks won the gold medal. A second American entry, the Brooklyn Crescents, was disqualified after arriving too late to play their scheduled semi-final match against the Shamrocks, leaving only three teams in the actual competition.
The Winnipeg Shamrocks were crowned Olympic champions in lacrosse's first appearance at the Games. The participation of a Mohawk nation team gave Indigenous athletes prominent representation in early Olympic competition. Lacrosse would appear again at the 1908 Olympics before being dropped from the program, with ongoing efforts in later decades to restore it as an Olympic sport.
