Lawrence, Kansas had long been a center of abolitionist sentiment and a base for Jayhawkers — free-state militia groups known for raiding pro-slavery settlements in western Missouri. This made the town a symbolic and strategic target for Confederate guerrilla forces operating along the Missouri-Kansas border.
On the morning of August 21, 1863, Quantrill's Raiders, a Confederate guerrilla band led by William Quantrill, descended on Lawrence, Kansas. The attack killed approximately 150 men and boys, making it one of the most lethal civilian massacres of the American Civil War.
The massacre intensified the brutal border warfare between Kansas and Missouri and prompted Union General Thomas Ewing Jr. to issue Order No. 11, forcibly depopulating several Missouri border counties to deprive guerrillas of civilian support, further escalating regional violence and displacement.
