Cause

Buford O. Furrow Jr., an American white supremacist, harbored extremist anti-Semitic ideology that motivated him to target a Jewish institution. On the morning of August 10, 1999, he arrived at the North Valley Jewish Community Center in Granada Hills, Los Angeles, with an Uzi submachine gun.

Event

At approximately 10:50 a.m. PT, Furrow entered the lobby of the North Valley Jewish Community Center and opened fire, discharging 70 bullets into the complex. The attack wounded five people, including three children, a teenage counselor, and an office worker, before Furrow fled the scene.

Consequence

Shortly after the shooting, Furrow fatally shot a mail carrier before fleeing the state. He later surrendered to authorities. The attack intensified national debate about hate crimes, domestic terrorism, and gun control, and drew attention to the dangers posed by organized white supremacist movements within the United States.
