In the early 1950s, the swimwear company Catalina organized an international beauty competition as an alternative to the Miss America pageant, which had barred contestants wearing Catalina swimwear. This commercial motivation led to the creation of a new, globally oriented pageant intended to showcase women from many nations.
On 28 June 1952, the first Miss Universe pageant was held at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium in California. Hosted by Bob Russell and presided over by actress Piper Laurie, the event drew contestants from thirty countries and territories. Armi Kuusela of Finland was crowned Miss Universe 1952, wearing a Romanov Imperial Nuptial Crown valued at $500,000.
