Soviet authorities alleged that the Polish minority harbored saboteurs and spies linked to the Polish Military Organization (POW). This suspicion, embedded in the broader paranoia of Stalin's Great Terror, provided the official pretext for targeting ethnic Poles as an enemy group within Soviet borders.
On August 11, 1937, NKVD chief Nikolai Yezhov issued Order No. 00485, directing the liquidation of supposed Polish sabotage and espionage networks. The operation formed the centerpiece of the NKVD's national operations and authorized the systematic arrest, deportation, and execution of Polish nationals and Soviet citizens of Polish origin.
The operation resulted in the systematic elimination of a large portion of the Soviet Union's Polish minority between 1937 and 1938. It stands as the largest ethnically motivated shooting action of the Great Terror and became a defining example of Stalinist ethnic cleansing targeting a specific national group.
