Roman Protasevich, a Belarusian opposition activist and journalist, was aboard Ryanair Flight 4978 traveling from Athens to Vilnius. Belarusian authorities sought to detain him and fabricated a Hamas bombing threat as a pretext to compel the aircraft to divert to Minsk National Airport.
On 23 May 2021, Belarusian authorities forced the Buzz-operated Ryanair flight into Belarusian airspace to land in Minsk under false security pretenses. Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega were removed and arrested, while the remaining passengers were held for seven hours before the aircraft was permitted to continue to Vilnius.
The incident drew widespread international condemnation from the EU, NATO, the US, the UK, and Canada. The EU and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency banned European carriers from Belarusian airspace. Belarus also faced additional diplomatic repercussions, including the eventual closure of its embassy in Canada.
