Transit of Venus — astronomical transit of Venus across the Sun

December 1, 1874

The 1874 transit of Venus was one of two closely observed 19th-century transits used to calculate the astronomical unit and Earth–Sun distance.

Cause

Venus, Earth, and the Sun periodically align due to near-commensurable orbital periods of Earth and Venus (approximately 8:13 and 243:395), causing Venus to pass directly in front of the solar disk. These alignments occur in pairs eight years apart, separated by gaps of 105.5 and 121.5 years, making each occurrence a rare and anticipated astronomical event.

Event

On 9 December 1874, Venus transited across the face of the Sun, appearing as a small black disk against the solar surface. Astronomers from numerous nations mounted international expeditions to observe the transit from widely separated locations on Earth, timing Venus's passage precisely to exploit the parallax method first proposed by Edmond Halley for determining the Sun's distance.

Consequence

Observations from the 1874 transit, combined with those of the paired 1882 transit, yielded improved estimates of the astronomical unit—the fundamental baseline for measuring distances across the Solar System. These measurements advanced solar system cartography and demonstrated the value of coordinated international scientific expeditions, laying groundwork for later cooperative astronomical programs.
