Italy and Yugoslavia advanced to the UEFA Euro 1968 final through their respective qualifying groups, quarter-finals, and semi-finals. Notably, Italy's semi-final against the Soviet Union was settled by a coin toss after a goalless draw, while Yugoslavia defeated England 1–0 in their semi-final.
The final was played across two matches at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The first match on 8 June ended 1–1 after extra time, necessitating a replay. Two days later, on 10 June, Italy won the replay 2–0 before a crowd of 32,866, clinching the tournament.
Italy secured their first UEFA European Championship title with the 2–0 replay victory over Yugoslavia. The final is one of very few in the tournament's history to require a second match, as later editions adopted penalty shootouts to break ties.
