Spain and Italy both emerged from Group C — Spain as group winners after a draw with Italy plus victories over Croatia and Ireland, while Italy finished second. Spain then eliminated France and Portugal (on penalties) in the knockouts; Italy eliminated England (on penalties) and Germany, setting up a rematch of their group-stage meeting in the final.
On 1 July 2012 at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv before 63,170 spectators, Spain faced Italy in the UEFA Euro 2012 final. Spain won comprehensively 4–0, the greatest margin of victory in any European Championship final, with Andrés Iniesta named UEFA man of the match. Pedro Proença of Portugal refereed the match.
Spain became the first national team to win two consecutive European Championships and the first to claim three consecutive major international tournaments, having also won Euro 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup without conceding in any knockout stage. Because Spain had already qualified for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup as World Cup holders, runners-up Italy took UEFA's berth in that tournament.
