UEFA expanded the European Championship from 16 to 24 teams for the 2016 edition, and France was selected as host nation on 28 May 2010 following a bidding contest against Italy and Turkey. Spain entered as two-time defending champions having won in 2008 and 2012, making the field highly competitive.
Euro 2016 took place in France from 10 June to 10 July 2016, contested across ten cities. Spain, the defending champions, were eliminated in the round of 16 by Italy. Portugal advanced to the final at the Stade de France, where they defeated host nation France 1–0 after extra time to claim their first European Championship title.
Portugal's victory earned them a place at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. The expanded 24-team format, introduced for the first time at this tournament, became the new standard for future European Championships, broadening participation across the continent.
