Cause

A Nepalese government commission concluded that the probable cause of the accident was pilot disorientation and a loss of situational awareness during the approach to Tribhuvan International Airport. The airline and Bangladesh's commission representative disputed this finding, arguing that air traffic controllers failed to fulfill their duties and could have prevented the crash.

Event

US-Bangla Airlines Flight 211, a Bombardier Q400 operating a scheduled international service from Dhaka to Kathmandu, crashed while landing at Tribhuvan International Airport on 12 March 2018. The aircraft burst into flames on impact, killing 51 of the 71 people on board. The 20 survivors sustained serious injuries from both the impact and the resulting fire.

Consequence

The disaster became the deadliest aviation accident involving a Bangladeshi airline and the deadliest incident in the history of the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft type. It prompted scrutiny of both flight crew training standards and air traffic control procedures at Tribhuvan International Airport, with the investigation findings contested between Nepalese authorities and Bangladeshi aviation officials.
