Originally scheduled for late 2020, the match between reigning champion Magnus Carlsen and challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was rescheduled to coincide with Expo 2020 in Dubai, making it the first sporting event held at a world exposition since the 1904 Summer Olympics.
The match was played in Dubai from 24 November to 12 December 2021. After five consecutive draws, Carlsen won the pivotal Game 6 in 136 moves, the longest game in World Chess Championship history. Nepomniachtchi's play deteriorated sharply afterward, allowing Carlsen to exploit one-move blunders in Games 8, 9, and 11.
Carlsen won the match convincingly with four wins, seven draws, and no losses, retaining the World Chess Championship title. Nepomniachtchi's collapse in the second half of the match drew significant attention to the psychological pressures of elite chess competition at the championship level.
