Biography
Abhishek Amitabh Bachchan (born 5 February 1976) is an Indian actor and film producer who has made a name for himself in Hindi cinema for over two decades. Born in Mumbai to famous actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, he joined the film industry as part of one of Bollywood's most well-known acting families. He started his career in 2000 with the drama film Refugee, though his early years saw several commercial flops, leading to doubts about his potential as a leading actor.
Everything changed for Bachchan in 2004 with his role in the action film Dhoom, which kicked off a successful streak. That year, he also received praise for his performances in Yuva and later in Sarkar (2005) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), winning three consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actor. He showed his range in genres such as the romantic comedy Bunty Aur Babli (2005) and the biographical drama Guru (2007), both earning him Filmfare Award nominations for Best Actor.
Over his career, Bachchan has shown his commercial appeal through successful ensemble films like the Dhoom series, Dostana (2008), Bol Bachchan (2012), Happy New Year (2014), and Housefull 3 (2016). His move to digital platforms has been successful too, with strong performances in streaming projects such as Breathe: Into the Shadows (2020), Ludo (2020), and Dasvi (2022). The last earned him the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor in a Web Original Film.
As a producer, Bachchan gained significant acclaim with the comedy-drama Paa (2009), which won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Feature Film. His recent roles in smaller dramas like Ghoomer (2023) and I Want to Talk (2024) have earned praise from critics, with the latter finally winning him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor after several nominations. Between 2012 and 2016, he regularly appeared in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list, showing his commercial success and public recognition. Bachchan married actress Aishwarya Rai in 2007, and they have one daughter together.
Before Fame
Abhishek Bachchan started his education at Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai, then moved to Aiglon College, a boarding school in Switzerland, for his higher secondary education. He later attended Mithibai College in Mumbai. Growing up as the son of Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, he was always around the film industry, which brought both pressure and high expectations for his career.
Even with his family background, Bachchan faced challenges entering Bollywood. His debut film, Refugee, in 2000 did moderately well, but the 2000s were a time of change in Hindi cinema. The industry was shifting from traditional melodramas to more modern storytelling, and actors had to adapt to new audience tastes and global influences on Indian cinema.
