Biography

Adelaide of Paris (c. 850-901) was a Frankish noblewoman who became Queen of the West Franks by marrying Louis the Stammerer. Born around 850, she came from the influential Parisian nobility and was part of the powerful aristocratic families that shaped ninth-century Francia. Her marriage to Louis, shortly before he became king, made her his second wife and placed her at the heart of Carolingian politics during a time of instability and territorial fragmentation.

As Queen of the West Franks from 877 to 879, Adelaide faced the challenges of her husband's short two-year reign, which included Viking raids and internal disputes over succession and control. Her role went beyond ceremonial duties, as queens in this period often engaged in diplomatic negotiations and acted as key intermediaries between competing nobles.

After Louis's death in 879, Adelaide played a critical role in the succession arrangements. She was the mother of Charles the Simple, who later became a significant ruler of the West Frankish kingdom. Charles's rise to power in 898 confirmed her political importance and showed her success in advancing his interests during the turbulent years following his father's death. As a widow, Adelaide worked to support Charles's claims and maintain the networks necessary for his political survival.

Adelaide died on November 10, 901, in Laon, having lived to see her son established as king of the West Franks. Her death came as Charles was strengthening his authority and dealing with challenges from Viking settlements and rival claimants. Throughout her life, she showed the role of Carolingian queens as political figures who used marriage alliances, maternal authority, and noble connections to influence events beyond individual reigns.

Before Fame

Adelaide was born into a wealthy Parisian noble family in the mid-ninth century, a time when local aristocrats were gaining more influence as the Carolingian Empire started to fall apart. Her family's connections made her an appealing candidate for royal marriages because the Parisian nobility controlled important areas and resources needed to maintain royal power there.

She became queen after Louis the Stammerer decided to strengthen his position by marrying into powerful noble families. Adelaide's marriage to Louis was a strategic political move that gave him important support from Parisian aristocrats and put her in the upper ranks of Frankish society.
