Biography
Adelchis of Benevento was the leader of the Principality of Benevento from 854 until his assassination in May 878. He took over after his brother Radelgar, following their father Radelchis I's establishment of the family's rule. His time in power involved a constant battle to keep Benevento independent from three major threats: Saracen raiders in the south, the Frankish Emperor Louis II in the north, and Byzantine forces in the east. The principality was strategically important in southern Italy, making it a target for these powers.
Adelchis initially faced defeats against Muslim forces, losing significantly at Bari in 860, which forced him to pay tribute to the Saracen emir. Realizing his military's limitations, he sought help from Emperor Louis II, despite the risks to Beneventan freedom. This alliance was successful militarily, with Louis defeating the Saracen forces in 866 and taking Bari in 871, ending the immediate Muslim threat.
However, Louis II's victory came at a cost Adelchis couldn't accept, as the emperor began placing permanent garrisons in Beneventan fortresses, turning the principality into a Frankish protectorate. In August 871, Adelchis shocked many by imprisoning Emperor Louis II while he was staying as a guest in Benevento. This act of betrayal inspired a contemporary poem lamenting the breach of hospitality customs.
The imprisonment lasted about a month, during which a new Saracen invasion occurred. Facing this renewed threat, Adelchis decided he needed Louis's military skills and released him, extracting a promise that Louis would never return with an army or seek revenge. Louis agreed but went to Rome in 872, where Pope Adrian II released him from this promise on May 28. When Louis tried to retaliate against Adelchis, the prince sought protection from the Byzantine Empire. Adelchis was assassinated in May 878, likely due to the complex political schemes around his principality. His death marked the end of an era for Lombard legal tradition, as he was the last Lombard ruler to update the ancient Edictum Rothari law code.
Before Fame
Adelchis was born into the ruling family of Benevento as the son of Radelchis I, who had established the family's power in the Lombard principality. During his youth, Lombard power in Italy was divided after Charlemagne's conquest of the Lombard Kingdom in 774, leaving only Benevento and Salerno as independent Lombard territories.
He became the ruler in 854 after his brother Radelgar died, taking on a principality that had remained independent through careful diplomacy and strategic alliances. The ninth century brought new challenges to southern Italy, with Muslim raiders setting up bases in the region, and both the Frankish Empire and Byzantine Empire trying to expand their control over these strategically important areas.
