Biography
Otto Adolf Eichmann was a German-Austrian Nazi official who played a key role in the Holocaust. Born in Solingen, Germany, on March 19, 1906, he moved with his family to Austria in 1914. After struggling with his studies at Bundesrealgymnasium Linz Fadingerstraße, he worked for a short time at his father's mining company before becoming a traveling oil salesman in 1927. In 1932, Eichmann joined the Nazi Party and the SS, starting his involvement with the Nazi regime. He went back to Germany in 1933 and joined the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), the SS intelligence agency, where he handled Jewish affairs, especially forced emigration. After World War II began in 1939, Eichmann's role grew as Nazi policy shifted from forced emigration to systematic extermination. He took part in the January 1942 Wannsee Conference, where the Final Solution was coordinated. SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich tasked him with managing the logistics of mass deportations of Jews to ghettos and extermination camps across German-occupied Europe. Rising to the rank of SS-Obersturmbannführer, Eichmann showed efficiency in organizing the transportation networks that facilitated the murder of millions. After Germany's defeat in 1945, he was captured by Allied forces but escaped custody and fled to Argentina, where he lived under a false name. In May 1960, Israeli Mossad agents captured him in Buenos Aires. He was brought to Israel to stand trial before the Supreme Court of Israel in Jerusalem. The highly publicized trial, which began in 1961, led to his conviction for crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes against the Jewish people. On June 1, 1962, Eichmann was executed by hanging at Ramla prison, the only person ever executed by Israel for war crimes.
Before Fame
Eichmann had a tough start with school and didn't have a clear career path. His family moved from Germany to Austria when he was eight, and he went to the Bundesrealgymnasium Linz Fadingerstraße, but he didn't finish school there. He first worked briefly at his dad's mining company and then became a traveling salesman for an oil company in 1927. These jobs gave him organizational skills that he would later use in his work with the Nazis. After World War I, economic instability and political turmoil in Austria and Germany made extremist groups like the Nazi Party appealing to many young men looking for a sense of purpose and advancement. Eichmann joined the Nazi Party and the SS in 1932, driven by personal ambition and the wider attraction of Nazi ideas during this time of social and economic trouble.
