Biography

Paul Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945) was Nazi Germany's Minister of Propaganda and a close follower of Adolf Hitler. Born in Rheydt, Germany, he studied at several universities—Bonn, Heidelberg, Freiburg, and Würzburg—and earned a doctorate in philology from Heidelberg in 1922. Originally wanting to be an author, Goebbels joined the Nazi Party in 1924 and quickly stood out for his speaking skills and dedication to Nazi beliefs.

In 1926, he became the Gauleiter of Berlin, showing great skill in using propaganda to promote the Nazi cause. Once the party gained power in 1933, he became Reich Minister of Propaganda, swiftly taking control of German media, arts, and information. He was particularly good at using new technologies like radio and film to spread Nazi messages. His campaigns pushed extreme antisemitism, attacked Christian churches, and later focused on keeping up morale during World War II.

Goebbels was behind some of the regime's worst propaganda acts, including the planning of Kristallnacht in 1938 and the dehumanization of Jews that led to the Holocaust. His antisemitic efforts helped lay the groundwork for the killing of six million Jews and other targeted groups. As the war went on, he turned his attention to total war propaganda and was appointed Reich Plenipotentiary for Total War in July 1944.

Married to Magda Goebbels, with whom he had six children, Goebbels stayed loyal to Hitler until the end. As Germany neared defeat in 1945, he and his family joined Hitler in the Führerbunker in Berlin. After Hitler's suicide, Goebbels briefly served as Chancellor before killing himself on May 1, 1945, after he and Magda killed their six children. His detailed diaries from 1923 to 1945 offer insight into the Nazi regime and are a valuable historical resource for that time period.

Before Fame

Joseph Goebbels was raised in a Catholic working-class family in the Rhineland during the last years of the German Empire. After contracting polio as a child, he was left with a clubfoot, resulting in a limp that affected him for the rest of his life. Despite financial struggles, he did well in school and attended several universities, studying literature, history, and philosophy.

After earning his doctorate, Goebbels found it hard to make a name for himself as a writer and journalist. The economic problems and political chaos of the Weimar Republic, along with his personal frustrations and rising nationalist feelings, led him to radical politics. He first worked with Gregor Strasser in the northern part of the Nazi Party before fully embracing Hitler's ideas, seeing a chance to use his intelligence and speaking skills to gain political power.
