Biography
Agnes Monica Muljoto, professionally known as Agnez Mo, is an Indonesian singer, songwriter, and actress born on July 1, 1986, in Jakarta. She started her entertainment career in the 1990s as a child, recording four children's albums and hosting various TV variety shows before moving into mainstream pop music. Her early start set the stage for one of Southeast Asia's successful musical careers.
Mo became a teen idol with her leading role in the TV series Pernikahan Dini in 2001, which marked her shift from being a child entertainer to a serious performer. Her first adult studio album, And the Story Goes, released in 2003, went Double Platinum in Indonesia and cemented her spot in the country's music scene. She kept this success going with albums like Whaddup A.. '?! (2005) and Sacredly Agnezious (2009), while also starring in various TV dramas.
In the mid-2000s, Mo reached beyond Indonesia by appearing in Taiwanese dramas The Hospital and Romance In The White House in 2006. She bolstered her reputation by judging top singing competitions such as Indonesian Idol from 2010 to 2012 and The Voice Indonesia from 2016 to 2018. These roles highlighted her expertise and impact on regional entertainment.
Mo's international breakthrough came in 2013 when she rebranded as Agnez Mo for her first English-language studio album. After signing with The Cherry Party, an American label linked to Sony Music, in 2014, she released her first international single "Coke Bottle," featuring American artists Timbaland and T.I. Her second English album, X, produced by Danja in 2017, further boosted her international presence. Several of her singles, like "Boy Magnet," "Overdose" featuring Chris Brown, and "Patience," found success by hitting the US Billboard charts. In 2025, she took a role in American TV as Lila Hoth in the series Reacher, marking another significant step in her international career.
Before Fame
Growing up in Jakarta's entertainment world, Agnes Monica Muljoto displayed musical talent from a young age, prompting her parents to support her entry into the industry as a child performer. The 1990s in Indonesia offered chances for young talents, especially in children's music and TV shows, which became her starting point.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Indonesia's entertainment industry was expanding and evolving, allowing artists to mix traditional Indonesian entertainment with modern pop culture. Agnes' early work in children's albums and as a variety show host set her up to take advantage of these changes as she grew into her teenage years.
