Biography
Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, was Indonesia's seventh president from 2014 to 2024. He was the first Indonesian leader from outside the usual political and military circles. Born Mulyono on June 21, 1961, in Surakarta, Central Java, he went from being a furniture businessman to a major political figure in Southeast Asia. He studied at SMA Negeri 6 Surakarta and later attended Universitas Gadjah Mada for forestry engineering, which shaped his practical approach to governance.
After graduating, Jokowi entered the furniture business, working as a producer and exporter before starting his own companies. His political career began in 2005 when he became the mayor of Surakarta, gaining national attention for his active leadership and city development projects. Known for his blusukan—unplanned visits to meet with people directly—he built a reputation as a populist leader, connecting effectively with everyday Indonesians and addressing their concerns.
Jokowi's rise in politics sped up when he became Governor of Jakarta in 2012. He introduced significant improvements in healthcare, education, and public transport while dealing with persistent problems like flooding and inefficient bureaucracy. His achievements in Jakarta set him up as the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle's presidential candidate in 2014, where he defeated Prabowo Subianto. He won re-election in 2019 against the same opponent, showing continued public support for his leadership style.
As president, Jokowi focused on large infrastructure projects, like highways, ports, airports, and the planned move of the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara in East Kalimantan. His government worked on economic diplomacy and maritime security, taking strong action against illegal fishing while keeping Indonesia's non-aligned foreign policy. Despite criticism over civil liberties and environmental issues, he maintained high approval ratings for much of his presidency. He and his wife Iriana have three children, and his many international honors show his global diplomatic impact, including awards from across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe for his contributions to global cooperation and regional peace.
Before Fame
Growing up in Surakarta during the Suharto era, Jokowi saw Indonesia's rapid economic growth up close and also noticed the limits of top-down governance. Coming from a modest background, he understood the challenges faced by ordinary Indonesians, especially small business owners and city dwellers. After earning his forestry engineering degree, he spent over ten years building furniture businesses. There, he learned to navigate Indonesia's complex regulations and developed practical problem-solving skills that would shape his political style.
The end of Suharto's New Order regime in 1998 opened the door for new political voices, especially at the local level where democratic changes first began. Jokowi's success in business and his involvement in the Surakarta community made him a credible choice compared to traditional politicians when he decided to run for mayor in 2005. This decision kicked off a political career that would eventually change Indonesian governance.
