Biography
Ali Akbar Hashemi Bahramani Rafsanjani was born on August 25, 1934, in Bahreman, Iran, into a family that farmed pistachios. He studied religion at the University of Qom and later attended the University of Isfahan and the University of Tehran. As a young cleric, he joined the movement against the Shah's regime, building strong connections with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and other opposition leaders. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was imprisoned several times for his political activities but remained dedicated to the Islamic revolution.
After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Rafsanjani became a key figure in forming the new Islamic Republic. He was Speaker of Parliament from 1980 to 1989 and also acted as Commander-in-Chief during the Iran-Iraq War. His skills in management and practical approach to rule made him influential within the revolutionary government. In 1989, he was elected president and began an eight-year term that focused on rebuilding Iran after the war.
As Iran's fourth president from 1989 to 1997, Rafsanjani made major economic changes to help the country recover. He worked on privatizing state-owned businesses, attracting foreign investments, and taking a more moderate stance in international relations. His government centered on rebuilding and opening up the economy, earning him a reputation for balancing ideology with practical needs. He married Effat Marashi, and their family later became important in Iranian business and politics.
After his presidency, Rafsanjani remained influential as head of the Assembly of Experts from 2007 to 2011 and chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council. He unsuccessfully ran for president in 2005, losing to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the runoff, and was barred from running in 2013 by the Guardian Council. His family faced political isolation after supporting the opposition during the 2009 election protests. Rafsanjani passed away on January 8, 2017, in Tajrish from a heart attack, although his family disputed the official cause, pointing to high levels of radioactivity found in his body.
Before Fame
Rafsanjani grew up in a middle-class family of pistachio farmers in Bahreman, where he learned the business skills that would later shape his political career. During his early religious schooling in Qom, he met future revolutionary leaders, including Ayatollah Khomeini, who guided him in becoming politically active against the Pahlavi monarchy.
The 1960s and 1970s saw increasing opposition to the Shah's modernization plans and authoritarian rule. Rafsanjani took part in underground political activities, facing imprisonment and harassment by the SAVAK secret police. His role in distributing revolutionary literature and organizing clerical opposition helped establish him as a dedicated revolutionary, setting the stage for his future prominence in the Islamic Republic.
