Biography
Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina was born on October 24, 1891, in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. He became one of the longest-ruling dictators in Latin America. Known as "El Jefe" (The Boss), he controlled the Dominican Republic from 1930 until he was assassinated on May 30, 1961, in Santo Domingo. He was the 36th and 39th president during two periods (1930-1938 and 1942-1952) and held the position of generalissimo, making him the country's supreme leader even when not formally in office.
Trujillo's climb to power began through his military career, leading to a coup in 1930 that set up his dictatorship. His 31-year rule, called the Trujillo Era or "El Trujillato," was marked by extreme authoritarianism, the widespread use of state terrorism, and a personality cult focused on his family. The regime's security forces, including the infamous SIM (Military Intelligence Service), systematically eliminated political opponents and maintained control through fear and violence.
The brutality of Trujillo's regime was evident in numerous massacres and political murders. The most notorious was the 1937 Parsley Massacre, where Dominican forces killed an estimated 17,000 to 35,000 Haitians along the border. This event severely damaged Dominican-Haitian relations for decades. Overall estimates suggest that between 25,000 and 50,000 people died or disappeared during his rule, making it one of the most deadly dictatorships in the Western Hemisphere.
Trujillo's influence extended beyond Dominican borders through international assassination efforts and political interference. His agents were involved in the 1956 kidnapping and murder of Jesús Galíndez in New York City, the 1960 attempted assassination of Venezuelan President Rómulo Betancourt, and the murder of Spanish writer José Almoina in Mexico. The 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters, prominent opposition figures, particularly outraged the international community and led to Organization of American States sanctions against the Dominican Republic. These actions ultimately isolated his regime and led to the plot that resulted in his assassination on May 30, 1961.
Before Fame
Trujillo was born into a middle-class family in San Cristóbal and had limited schooling when he was young. He worked in various roles such as a telegraph operator and security guard before joining the Dominican National Guard in 1918. His military career moved quickly during the U.S. occupation of the Dominican Republic (1916-1924) when American forces trained the local forces.
The Dominican Republic was politically unstable in the 1920s, which created openings for ambitious military officers like Trujillo. After the U.S. left, the country faced significant political chaos with frequent government changes. Trujillo climbed the military ranks, becoming commander of the National Police in 1925 and later the army chief. His role gave him control over the country's security forces, which he used to plan the 1930 coup that brought him to power.
